Some time between the events of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic transformed into Super Sonic after absorbing a dose of radiation from the Chaos Emeralds. Believing two foxes were in danger, he pulled one out but when he went back to save the other one the second tail had disappeared. Tails was grateful for Sonic's rescue, and Sonic himself became quite impressed when he witnessed Tails' ability to fly. The two became fast friends.
