  • Trantalo Kendar was a Tiste Edur warrior garrisoned in the town of Rennis on the western coast of the Letherii Empire. He was a member of the Beneda clan and was the youngest of four brothers. Trantalo did not consider himself to be particularly bright, but, unlike most Tiste Edur, he liked horses and was an unusually fine rider. His first exposure to war and the devastation found on battlefields came at the time of the conquest when he was an 'unblooded' fifteen year old, assisting an aunt who worked as a healer in the Tiste Edur army under the command of Hannan Mosag. Because of this early exposure to the physical destructiveness of fighting, especially when Letherii or Tiste Edur sorcery had been widely used on combatants, Trantalo experienced the loss of a measure of the usual eagerness of a young warrior for battle. Still, he appreciated the privileged status that the Tiste Edur enjoyed in Lether because of their position there as conquerors.
