Dr. Clive was the ship's surgeon during Hornblower's tour as lieutenant aboard HMS Renown, He was very reluctant to diagnose Sawyer's paranoia and certify that the captain was unfit to command, because of his long service under him. Only after Sawyer's fall does he finally do so. In Lieutenant Hornblower Sawyer remains incapacitated throughout, in Hornblower: Mutiny the captain has lucid periods, and tries to regain control of the ship, so Clive has to give him increasing doses of opiates to subdue him.
