Basan, or “mountain roosters”, were nocturnal odd denizens of Chikushudo, who lived in mountainous regions, resembling oversized roosters with vibrant plumage, able to glow like a sunset or darken to pitch black. Basan breathed blue or green flames when angered or frightened. They were also known as Basa-basa, an onomatopoeic name mimicking their distinct call.
