He played junior hockey for the Montreal Junior Canadiens and Montreal Junior Royals from 1940 to 1943. From then until 1945 Buchanan played for Canadian Navy teams in Montreal and Toronto. In 1945 he joined the San Francisco Shamrocks for two seasons. Buchanan then played for the Shawinigan Falls Cataractes of the Quebec Senior Hockey League from 1947 to 1952. He was an All-Star four times amd won the Byng of Vimy Trophy in 1948 and 1950. While there he was brought up by the New York Rangers for two games in 1948-49. He did not score any points in the NHL.
