  • Lane Meddick (born 18th March 1924 in Barry, Glamorgan) played two roles on Coronation Street: removal man George Abbott, who in April 1961 assisted Ena Sharples. He returned to the programme in August 1971 as Sidney Burgess, the brother-in law of Ernest Bishop. After wartime service in the RAF, he became a journalist and only turned to acting at the age of twenty-six, joining a touring repertory company without any previous conventional training. He made his television debut for the BBC at Alexandra Palace in Journey's End. Other roles on television included Dixon of Dock Green, Z Cars, The Army Game and No Hiding Place.
