Michael Kohr, a new recruit fresh out of training for the Belkan Army, is excited and optimistic about Belka's eventual victory in the war. He describes his unit, Tollwut Hund, especially its leader Captain Erhardt, as well as their dinner that night. He also describes their first duty assignment: help secure Route 171 in Arlon. In two days, Kohr's unit arrives at Arlon, but too late; an Ustian air squadron had already destroyed the Belkan forces stationed there. Kohr and his comrades stayed 50km behind, tending to the wounded and setting up camp. Another man in Kohr's unit sent around chocolates to lighten their mood, while Captain Erhardt gave the news that Belka would be sending a powerful unit to retake Route 171. Alone to his thoughts, Kohr began to grow hatred for Ustio, all but swea

  • Michael Kohr, a new recruit fresh out of training for the Belkan Army, is excited and optimistic about Belka's eventual victory in the war. Alone to his thoughts, Kohr began to grow hatred for Ustio, all but swearing to make them lose the war. Kohr's unit is ordered to give up Route 171, however, and fall back to Futuro Canal. On April 24th, the forces stationed at the canal are ambushed by joint Ustian and Osean forces. This is Kohr's first real taste of battle, yet he is only equipped with his 10mm pistol, whereas he wants to shoot down the Ustian fighters with a heavy machine gun. Reflecting on the end of the battle, he notes that one fighter with a red wing soared over the defeated forces in a seemingly-mocking manner. Kohr also notes that an official report stated two planes had attempted to penetrate Area B7R but failed to shoot down the ace squadron protecting it and returned to base. Following the failure to defend Futuro Canal, Kohr and his comrades are ordered to position themselves upstream and attack forces that go through the river. Captain Erhardt tells his men to ignore that order, as they are not equipped with proper weapons for attacking naval vessels. Kohr briefly describes each of the men in his unit, and hopes for support due to having stayed in their position for weeks with low supplies. Within a few days, a helicopter arrives to rescue them; however, the celebrations are short-lived as they immediately receive orders to help defend Excalibur. Kohr reflects on his trips to Tauberg with his father, as well as the protests against the construction of the military base and superweapon in order to preserve the wildlife. Kohr describes "Operation Brandfleck", a specific operation to lure the Galm Team into Excalibur airspace to allow either the laser weapon or Tollwut Hund's anti-air fire to shoot them down with ease. Kohr had heard about a mercenary unit that the Belkan Army HQ wanted to wipe out, and recognized that Galm Team was this unit and that the red-winged fighter from Futuro Canal was a member. However, the operation is a complete failure, as the red-winged fighter's wingman destroyed Excalibur and they failed to shoot them down. Kohr then goes on to describe in detail the death of two of his comrades, Corporal Berger and Private Rosenberg. A Belkan officer arrives after the fact to survey the scene and the damage, and gives empty congratulations to those who survived. At this point, Kohr starts to share his innermost distaste in the war. In his final entry, Kohr describes the patriotism - and slight ignorance - of every Belkan citizen towards their country, and how it led to his initial feelings of the war, which has since changed. He goes into detail about the nuclear weapons used at the Waldreich Mountains, and accepts that the war is over. He notes that some soldiers are ignoring the cease-fire orders and continue to fight; however, he describes the gruesome death of one Belkan soldier who wished to continue fighting, and attributed this to a general distrust between the Belkans towards each other. Kohr's last words in the diary are of him describing a retreat to Anfang.
