Literally, terraforming a planet simply means that one is taking a world that was once inhabitable for life and making it habitable by various technological means. Though the word stems from making a world into one with Earth-like conditions, ‘terraforming’ a world can be adapted in the context of alien nomenclature if atmospheric conditions differ from the ones on Earth.

  • Literally, terraforming a planet simply means that one is taking a world that was once inhabitable for life and making it habitable by various technological means. Though the word stems from making a world into one with Earth-like conditions, ‘terraforming’ a world can be adapted in the context of alien nomenclature if atmospheric conditions differ from the ones on Earth. Generally speaking, Planetary Terraformation is the act of adjusting a planet’s atmosphere, gravity, and animal kingdom so it better suits that of the inhabitants that will live on it. Though Amish-like ‘Purist’ minority has labeled it as ‘playing God’, it is quite a long process that is a closely guarded government secret. Depending on local conditions, terraforming a world can take from 75 to 150 years to complete. However, this only applies to worlds that previously had a general atmosphere beforehand, for an airless world cannot be altered since there is nothing to sustain the addition of gases. Even though the specifications on how to change an atmosphere and gravity are guarded secrets, at least in Human space, transplanting a nation’s animal kingdom is not. On Earth, DNA samples were taken from every known non-extinct species of animal prior to the nuclear collapse, and are cloned onsite after a world is properly changed for Human colonization. The creatures are allowed many years time to adapt to their new environment before colonists are allowed to touchdown on the surface. Though Human nature dictates that they challenge the local animals for space, resources, and food – a healthy balance is created like that of Earth-that-was.
