  • Debre Maryam literally ("Mount of St. Mary") is a Nea Abyssinian monastery dedicated to the virgin Mary. The monastery is located on an island which bears the same name, on the southern side of Lake Tsana, in Gojjam Province. The monastery was founded by Saint Tewodros Tselalesh, one of the Seven Stars and a follower of the legendary Iyasus Mo'a who was educated at the famed Debre Hayq Istifanos monastery. The monastery was the site of a religious debate regarding the Unction (Qebat) doctrine by order of Emperor Iyasu I. The monastery burnt down during the Zemene Mesafint, but was later rebuilt by Emperor Tewodros II
