At approximately the same time that Barteau's regiment became part of the Confederate forces, another 2nd Tennessee Cavalry Regiment was organized within the United States Army. It was also known as the 2nd East Tennessee Cavalry Regiment. The Union regiment was composed of men from the eastern portion of Tennessee. The exact date it was organized is unknown, because its muster rolls were destroyed at Nolensville on December 30, 1862.
