During the Jkathan civil war, he ended up on the losing side, having hired on with Declin, Lord Kelcrag. He also made the mistake of sighting an arrow on Kethry's back during the fighting. Warrl tore up his leg to protect her. Devaril traded on his company's excellent reputation and his longstanding, if somewhat antagonistic, friendship with Idra to have her healing cadre patch him up after the battle. Kelcrag's staff wanted to remove his leg, but Idra's people (including Kethry herself), saved it. The experience convinced Devaril that Idra had been right, and he needed to hire his own healing staff instead of relying on his employer to supply them.
