They soon found that, after the Little Ice Age and the fall of Harald Hardrada, they were all that survived of the Vikings. They continued their ancestor's legacy by sacking Britain in vengeance, ultimately capturing London and killing the king and his family. Soon, the siege continued into Europe, reaching as far as the Black Sea. All that remained free of the Svalbardic invasion was Italy and the colleges of Oxford, who had been spared by the invaders to educate the troops. The Vatican rallied up a force to remove the Svalbardics from Europe, and Pope Lucas II led the Svalbard-Italian War. After the capture and execution of Thor IV, king of Svalbard, the Svalbardics retreated back to the Arctic, though their fleet was stationed at every passage into Viking territory to prevent anybody from following them. After Lucas II died of an unknown disease (cancer?), all that remained of the glory of Europe collapsed into anarchy, except for the Vatican. They gave suport to Oxford in exchange for sending Christian missionaries into the no-man's-land of England. Soon, Oxford grew in power and influence, and Wales, England and Scotland soon recovered, but under rule of the deans of Oxford. Meanwhile, in the ruins of Paris, John Donaghan proclaimed himself president and brought France back from the edge of destruction. The three surviving powers began to grow, but Europe was no longer the center of power. That was in Svalbard now. The Vikings grew friendly with the three remaining powers, China, Mughal and Ottoman. And so the balance of power was shifted northwards to Svalbard. They reigned for many years undisturbed, but then, as the Tsars expanded just like in OTL, the two came into conflict. A major war began, and the polar exploration campaign started by Oxford proved impossible. The Hardall-Tennyson Expedition, the last polar exploration, fled on one of their two ships, leaving behind the SS Lordhall in their haste to escape the fighting. The ship contained extensive data from Oxford, including a prototype steam engine and the plans for a primitive zepellin. The ship was discovered by Inuits, slowly allowing them to start growing in power in the less explored Canadian Arctic. Meanwhile, by the 1800s, the war is at full force, and the Tsars and Svalbardics are at equal force. Europe is slolwy recovering, including a series of tiny kingdoms popping up in Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands and Germany. But until Europe has fully recovered from the Svalbardic siege, they will play no part in the great movements in the Arctic. All history untold, preceding or following is now open.
