In many traditional RPGs, staves find themselves as the trademark weapon of magic using classes, said to help draw and amplify the user's own magical power through its own means and workings. In Final Fantasy, staves differ from the variation of rods, its kind aligned majority wise with the White Mage and healing based classes. Design wise, staves commonly feature a cane head or other sort of adornment naturally born of the material itself, with some featuring humbler details like crystals, tip ornaments, and sheathings of various materials.

- All staves give Magic attack bonuses as well as mediocre melee attack bonuses. Battlestaves are upgraded versions of normal staves with slightly better melee bonuses. Mystic staves are enchanted battlestaves that have better Magic attack bonuses than battlestaves and equal melee attack bonuses. With the exception of White staves, basic staves have no requirements to wield. White staves require the completion of the Wanted! quest as well as level 10 magic in order to wield them.
- All staves give Magic accuracy bonuses. Battlestaves are upgraded versions of normal staves, and mystic staves are enchanted battlestaves. Some battlestaves and mystic staves supply two kinds of runes instead of one: water and fire runes for steam staves, earth and fire runes for lava staves and water and earth runes for mud staves. Staves became two-handed weapons following the Evolution of Combat update. With the exception of white staves, basic staves have no requirements to wield. White staves require the completion of the Wanted! quest as well as level 25 Magic in order to wield them.
