When first encountered, it is believed that the sheriff is going to force him to sign the pact of the Black Knights under duress. However, it is quickly discovered that he is a Black Knight in earnest, hoping to get rich and earn Lady Marian as his wife (mostly in revenge against Edward, whom he feels "stole the woman he loved"—Kate, Edward's wife and Marian's mother). A horrified Guy of Gisborne tries and fails to spirit Marian away. The Knights and Robin have a confrontation, which Robin loses. Harold put Marian in shackles and packs her into his coach to return with her to Winchester. However, since the sheriff got what he wanted out of Harold (his signature on the pact), he no longer needs him and allows Guy to go after Marian. They ambush Harold's coach and Guy stabs Harold, killing him. Robin arrives seconds later only to see Marian riding off with Guy, and not in danger.
