The series was primarily filmed in an abandoned mansion for the El Mansion, green-screens in Vancouver, British Columbia (Canada) and numerous street alleys in Vancouver, British Columbia (Canada). The series takes place around 200 years before Superman's birth, and follows Jal-El (Tom Welling) whose House of El was ostracized and shamed at the time as he fights to redeem his family's honor and save his beloved world from chaos. The series takes a new look at the DC Universe, with more creativity. Despite the fact that Justin Hartley had previously portrayed two different DC Comics superheroes, Arthur Curry/Aquaman and Oliver Queen/Green Arrow, in the failed Aquaman pilot and 1 season show of Green Arrow, his acting was so superb, when he tried out for Dev-Em that he was the only actor considered for the role. Krypton focuses on Lyta-Zod's determination to honor his father's dying wish, Dev-Em's confrontation with many corrupt students with powers, and Jal's humanity. Krypton also shows what Lyta had seen during his 5 years of being wrecked on Krypton's sister planet, Argo City and how he was changed from it as a spoiled rich bad boy to a hardened, more serious, and cold archer. Most episodes have flashbacks to his time on Argo City. Krypton received generally positive reviews from critics, surpassing The X-Files. The first season earned the show several awards and nomination. Bruce Challa also had published a book giving insight and using his knowledge of comic book characters, the elements, and his creativity to explain the extended universe.
