His small-screen career began in the 1950s, starring in his own comedy shows Great Scott, It's Maynard! and Mostly Maynard. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, he was one of the most familiar faces of television comedy, with credits including Bert in Till Death Us Do Part (a role he originated in the 1969 film version), Up Pompeii!, Sykes, Love Thy Neighbour, Chico the Rainmaker, The Life of Riley, Paradise Island, Worzel Gummidge, The Gaffer and In Sickness and in Health. Maynard's dramatic talents were showcased in, among others: No Hiding Place, Armchair Theatre, Hunter's Walk, The Inheritors, The Sweeney, Trinity Tales, Tales of the Unexpected, Minder and Dalziel and Pascoe.
