Potions in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt are similar to the potions in The Witcher 2, a major difference being that most potions can be upgraded to Enhanced and, in turn, Superior versions which increase the buff effects, dosage limit and buff duration time, and decrease the toxicity. Potion recipes can be looted from chests, or bought from herbalists and alchemists in the world.

  • Potions in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt are similar to the potions in The Witcher 2, a major difference being that most potions can be upgraded to Enhanced and, in turn, Superior versions which increase the buff effects, dosage limit and buff duration time, and decrease the toxicity. Potion recipes can be looted from chests, or bought from herbalists and alchemists in the world. Furthermore, potions may be consumed at any time either by selecting and activating them in the inventory, or by assigning certain potions to hotkeys, and pressing a relevant hotkey during gameplay. Meditation is no longer used to consume potions. Potions are replenished during meditation which uses alcohol (alcohest by default, or another alcoholic ingredient such as dwarven spirit or mahakaman spirit if no alcohest is available). Thus, herb ingredients or monster parts are used only in the initial creation of a potion, or when a potion is being upgraded to a better variant. The Witcher 3 also introduces decoctions which are longer-lasting than regular potions and confer more powerful effects, however, decoctions also have high toxicity. Unlike regular potions, decoctions may only be used once before they have to be replenished.
