John, like many of his brothers and sisters, was given a strict religious education as a child, which prepared him for a life in the church. In 1456 he was elected the Archbishop of Trier to replace the deposed Jacob I of Sierk. In 1459 Theodoric of Isenburg-Büdingen was elected the Archbishop of Mainz ahead of Adolph II of Nassau-Wiesbaden-Idstein, and John became involved in the subsequent war between the candidates which became a larger theatre of the Baden-Palatinian War. John and the Margrave of Baden supported Adolph who succeeded in 1461. John died in 1503.
