Bubblegum Crisis (バブルガムクライシス) is the original OVA series. It is eight episodes long but was originally slated to run for 13 episodes. Due to legal problems between the two studios who jointly held the rights to the series, Artmic and Youmex, the series was discontinued prematurely. A sequel called Bubblegum Crash was made which is considered a shortened version of how the series was going to end.

- Bubblegum Crisis is an early cyberpunk anime series, that was brought over from Japan unedited and subtitled with English captions. The show has a superhero subtext (especially Iron Man); and many elements of the series, including the cityscape visuals, have been influenced by Blade Runner. The eight-episode series is set in a future Tokyo called "Mega Tokyo". The show's title is a metaphor for a world in a critical situation, which the creator compares to gum being blown into a bubble that will eventually pop.
