In medicine a false poitive result is a result that indicates that a patient has a condition when in fact they do not. For example a blood test may indicate that a patient has diabetes when in fact they don't. In this case there would be follow up tests and the error would probably be discovered. More worrying is a false negative. This indicates that a patient does not have a condition when in fact they do.

In software development we are more lucky, the only problem case is the false positive. This is because we know that the expected outcome should always be positive.
