| Synopsis
| - In Los Angeles 1948, Charlie Parish wakes up in a bathtub after a wild night of partying. He recalls, as he occasionally does, the night after the Pearl Harbor bombings. He remembers a mandatory blackout ordered across the city so as to avoid giving the Japanese bombers targets for bombing. People recall hearing Japanese planes flying overhead but there never were any.
Charlie pulls himself out of the tub and tries to piece together what happened the night before. He recalls seeing Flapjack Jones at the party at the Brown Derby. He appeared to have been roughed up. He then recalls his one-time writer friend, Gil Mason, had been kicked out due to bugging Bob Hope with movie ideas. Gil called Charlie a traitor, but eventually accepted his help as he slumped down in the alley in a drunken-stupor.

As Charlie cleaned up, he was preparing to leave the apartment. He suddenly found the body of Valeria Sommers sprawled out on the living room floor. He saw strangle marks around her neck and realized she had been murdered. He quickly whipped down the door and all the places he had been to hide any evidence that he had been at her apartment and left.
The next day at Victory Street Pictures, Dotty Quinn types up a publicity bio for Tyler Graves. Tyler tells him he'll memorize the lines as an actor. He asks Dotty why Earl's picture had been shut down. Dotty is shocked as it shouldn't have been shut down for several weeks. She snoops around and is shocked when she speaks with Phil Brodsky on the phone as to what happened.

Later, Dotty rushed to Charlie's house. She wakes him up as he sleeps off his alcohol. She tells him about Valeria's death and Charlie attempts to act surprised. She tells him how Frankz Schmitt, the director, was furious when he found out and attempted to change the script and write around Valeria's lines. Earl Rath stepped in and told him to have some decency for the deceased. Dotty then tells Charlie that his car is parked in Earl's front lawn and jokes that it must have been one helluva party.
Later, Phil Brodsky calls Charlie into his office. He tells him the 'story' is Val was never at Earl's party. He doesn't want bad publicity getting out. When Charlie looks at a file on his desk while he steps out of the office, he's shocked to see pictures of Val hanging herself and realizes it is a cover up. Brodsky asks for the names of whom else may have seen her at the party so that they can all pretend she wasn't there. He tells him he remembers Flapjack was there but he can't remember much else.
Later, Charlie meets with Gil at his apartment. They talk about script rewrites that Schmitt has them working on. Charlie pulls out a pair of black panties from his pants and realizes he may have messed up big time.
