In Domesday he appears in both Shropshire & Staffordshire as Reginald Bailgole and de Bailgole (anglicised as Balliol) - he was from Bailleul-en-Gouffern near Exmes, the caput of Earl Roger's vicompté in Normandy. His wife was the niece of Earl Roger, and had previously been married to his predecessor as sheriff. He aquired c. 1085 a large amount of land. Source - notes to 4,3 SHropshire Domesday
