The name of the area is derived from a tenanted farm holding of the Cumbernauld Estate of the Fleming family. It is a corruption of Scottish Gaelic bealach, meaning a pass in hills or mountains. The area is now one of the largest in Cumbernauld, with several thousand dwellings.
