The Light Advance Inertial Recoil Dampener, also know as 'LAIRD', is a system installed on all UNSC firearms to increase thier effectiveness. The LAIRD uses a cyclic set of minature hydraulic recoil buffers, which absorb the recoil of each shot. These are connected to a minature battery which operates them back into position. The battery return system allows it to recoil in hundredths of a second. Larger guns possess more dampeners, allowing them to achieve much faster rates of fire while still dampening the recoil. The LAIRD can reduce recoil by up to seventy percent, allowing even larger and more powerful guns to be controlled reliably under full automatic fire.
