The Fifty-Three was the name given to the fifty-three Steadholders of Grayson who died defending the Steadholder's Hall when the Faithful attacked the Moderates. As the Civil War began these steadholders sheltered with Protector John II in the Conclave Chamber from the Faithful and refused to surrender, all were killed. After the Civil War ended a plaque was placed outside the Chamber which displayed their names for future generations. (HH4)
