The Republican wave from 2016 continued with the G.O.P swiping six seats from the Democrats. Additionally, Independent Jay Leno claimed the Democratic controlled seat in California, however, Leno ended up caucusing with the Democrats. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell ended up retiring from his position following the elections, and was replaced with South Dakota Senator John Thune.
