  • The Vice Presidency of the United Republic of Ireland is the second highest office in the United Republic of Ireland. Unlike the President who is elected every seven years, the Vice President is elected every two years and can have a maximum of two terms as Vice President. The Vice Presidents official residence is in Dublin and it is named after James Connolly. The Vice President will only ever assume full control of the country if the President dies in office or is unable to fulfil his duties although he will only become the acting president until a new President is elected. As the acting President, the Vice President is not allowed to use Article 24 of the constitution which essentially makes him/her a dictator. The President can remove the Vice President from office at any time if he/she deems it necessary although this has never happened. As the second most important person in the country, the Vice President receives level 1 security at all times.
