The Officer of the Watch, also known as the Duty Officer or Officer of the Deck, is an officer placed temporary command of a vessel while the commanding officer is not present on the bridge. During normal operations this duty would fall to the Executive Officer or Second Officer, especially during Alpha and Beta shifts. It is more likely to find an officer from outside regular senior bridge staff, commanding the Gamma shift. Individual decks on Starfleet vessels had officers of the watch. (DS9 novelization: Trials and Tribble-ations)

- The Officer of the Watch is responsible for the smooth operation of the CIC. When the CO or XO is present they direct the ship's operations as per their orders and when neither is present, they command the ship's operations. The Officer of the Watch is not a stand alone position, but a role given to the highest ranked and trusted officer aboard. When required the Officer of the Watch will assume the role of XO, or if needed CO, and performs their duties as listed, for as long as required.
