Alardo was the only Duke of Bari. At the end of the Six Years' War, when the Duchy of Bari was separated from the Kingdom of Algarve by Valmiera and Jelgava, Alardo was installed as sovereign monarch of the new duchy. He was determined to distance his new duchy from its mother country politically, culturally, and linguistically, but he had little luck reforming his highly pro-Algarvian subjects.
