This is a parable created by Jesus and told to his followers (recorded in Luke 16:19-31). One can find the story in Luke 16:19-31 (CEV). Basically Lazarus is a poor beggar who lives near a rich man. The rich man pays him no heed. When Lazarus dies he goes to Abraham's bosom, whereas when the rich man dies and goes to hell. The rich man begs Lazarus to dip his finger in the water and then touch him to help relieve his torment, but Abraham tells him that is not possible as there is a chasm that can not be crossed. The rich man then begs Abraham to have Lazarus warn his brothers, but is told they already have Moses and the prophets. The rich man says if they saw a dead man they would listen, but Abraham tells him even if a man rises from the dead, they still would not believe.

In the Medieval period Lazarus was venerated as a patron saint of lepers by the Roman Catholic Church. Lazarus is the only person in a Gospels parable given a name.
