Richard Anthony Campanello (born August 13, 1958) is an Italian-American special agent, member of the FBI profiler team. He is most famous for tracking down the serial killer Dean Gatz, known as "The New York Ripper". Later, he wrote a best-selling book, Chasing the Ripper, in which he chronicled the four and half years chase. In the film adaptation, The Ripper, Campanello was played by actor Edward Norton. Campanello is married, and has two daughters and a son. He currently lives in New Jersey. In 2009, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President John McCain.
