A small, apparently isolated population is found in southern Guyana and adjacent Roraima. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry forests, subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, and heavily degraded former forest. The taxonomy is difficult, as it hybridizes widely with numerous other piculets such as the Varzea, ochre-collared and white-wedged piculet.
