  • The 2021 Australian Federal Election was a parliamentary election set to determine the members of the Australian Parliament for 2021-2024. The incumbent centre-right Liberal National Party government was defeated by the centre-left Labor Party led by Tony Burke. The election was held in the midst of a global financial crisis during which time the value of the Australian dollar plummeted. Unable to deal with the situation at hand, Tony Abbott and his government, by the election year, was in power for almost 8 years, giving in to incumbency fatigue to the relatively rejuvenated Labor party and their newly elected, moderate leader Tony Burke who successfully managed to present both himself and his party as a new alternative. The election is notable due to it being the beginning of the far-right social movement that would eventually go onto dominate Australia, due to the fact that it saw Jim Saleam, former head of the extreme right-wing Australia First Party, elected as an independent to the district of Wright, a traditionally Liberal/National area of the nation.
