The party was one of the first in the world to articulate Marxist policies, even though the party was not as radical as others, such as the Communist Party of Germany (KPD). As the organized expression of a Democratic and Socialist political movement, it fought for policies for the German working class. It was due to the fact it was one of the only Socialist parties in Germany at the time, and that the working class made up the largest portion of the population, that it quickly became the biggest political party in the country.

  • The party was one of the first in the world to articulate Marxist policies, even though the party was not as radical as others, such as the Communist Party of Germany (KPD). As the organized expression of a Democratic and Socialist political movement, it fought for policies for the German working class. It was due to the fact it was one of the only Socialist parties in Germany at the time, and that the working class made up the largest portion of the population, that it quickly became the biggest political party in the country. The SPD was the only party in the German Parliament whose members voted against the 1933 Enabling Act that gave Adolf Hitler dictatorial powers. The KPD had already been driven underground as an illegal clandestine party by the German secret police and military. All of the other members of parliament, from the Nazis to the conservatives and to Roman Catholics, voted for the Enabling Act. The party's main rivals were the right-wing parties such as the Roman Catholic confessional party called the German People's Party (DVP), the conservative German National People's Party (DNVP) and the National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP/Nazis).
