Gouveia debuted in 1952, racing at Darlington. Starting 26th in the field of sixty-six, Gouveia had early overheating woes in the event and struggled to a 59th place finish. All of Gouveia's other races came in 1955, when Gouveia had a solid season. Despite two DNFs during the year, Gouveia finished in the top-twenty in all four of his starts during the year. His best finishes on the year were a 12th at Martinsville and a career-best 9th at Martinsville.
