The Slaver Empire controlled a large galactic empire over one billion years ago. The Slavers were known as the masters of all intelligent beings in most of the galaxy until one species revolted. In the war that followed, the Slavers and all of their subjects were exterminated, wiping out most of the intelligent life in the galaxy. Like most elements in the episode, the Slavers were borrowed from Larry Niven's Known Space universe.

  • At one point, historians theorized that the Guardian of Forever might have been an artifact of the Slaver Empire, but the Guardian was found to predate the Slavers. (Federation News Service 2:1: "Multi-'Dimensional' Technology") Among the artifacts from the Slaver Empire were devices known as stasis boxes. The Romulan cloaking device may have been based on Slaver Empire technology found in one such box. (Star Trek: Shadowstar Station: "Hegemony")

(Star Trek: Shadowstar Station: "Hegemony") This article refrains from referring to any information from Larry Niven's non-Trek work or the Man-Kzin Wars novels. The Slaver Empire in the Trek universe(s) may be different in details from that of Larry Niven's Known Space series, similar to how Kzin in Trek are "kinder and gentler" than those in Known Space.
  • The Slaver Empire controlled a large galactic empire over one billion years ago. The Slavers were known as the masters of all intelligent beings in most of the galaxy until one species revolted. In the war that followed, the Slavers and all of their subjects were exterminated, wiping out most of the intelligent life in the galaxy. All that was known, and all that was left of those lost civilizations, were their stasis boxes, in which several advanced devices were found. The first one found contained a flying belt, the second a disruptor bomb, and one found in 2269 contained a weapon of a Slaver spy. (TAS: "The Slaver Weapon") Like most elements in the episode, the Slavers were borrowed from Larry Niven's Known Space universe.
