Spiderman, Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk...Svein Tuft? It may seem like a stretch to include a cyclist, even an Olympic cyclist in the prime of his career, among a list of superheroes. But when the Symmetrics Cycling Team released a promotional comic book about the team last season, the S-Team, Tuft was added to the long list of comic book heroes. The 2008 Olympics in Beijing may just provide the right stage for Tuft to prove he belongs.

But when the Symmetrics Cycling Team released a promotional comic book about the team last season, the S-Team, Tuft was added to the long list of comic book heroes. The 2008 Olympics in Beijing may just provide the right stage for Tuft to prove he belongs. Considering he won the International Cycling Union’s American Tour last season, and he is also a three-time national champion in the time trial, it is clear Tuft shares more with his comic book counterparts than a spandex uniform at work. The 31-year-old from Langley, B.C. excels at both the Road Race and the time trial events and has qualified for both competitions in Beijing. This season is shaping up to be a special one for Tuft. In addition to a trip to China to compete on the world’s biggest sporting stage, Tuft and his teammates will also ride the most famous cycling race in the world: the Tour de France. He and his S-Team teammates have already notched a win in Quebec’s Tour de Beauce, a six-day race ending in Quebec City. He was the first Canadian to win the race in 13 years. He heads to Beijing looking to stop Canada’s 24-year slump in the men’s road race (Steve Bauer won silver in 1984).
