In 1634, Allegretti was in the employ of the household of Ferdinand II, working under head seamstress Frau Stecher. Stecher was a spy for the Habsburg factotums keeping an eye on the Archduchess Maria Anna of Austria. Nonetheless, Allegretti and Maria Anna managed to form a relationship, and she became a part of Maria Anna's trusted circle. Before leaving Munich, Maria Anna told Susanna that her true destination was Brussels, and charged Susanna with assisting her advisor and friend, Doña Mencia de Mendoza in getting to safety. She later connected with Marc Cavriani, and the two traveled from Munich to the Swiss canton of Basel, with Susanna disguised as a boy. This article is a .
