  • Cold iron is forged at a lower temperature than normal iron or steel, in order to preserve its properties. It is mined deep underground, and famed for its efficacy against fey creatures. Cold iron weapons cost twice as much as their standard counterparts.
  • Cold iron is iron that has been smelted from ore at the lowest temperatures possible or otherwise separated from the gangue, but that is not ever heated again by any kind of fire (or equivalent temperatures). The iron is thus only cold-worked to form a weapon or tool of any kind. Spirits are harmed by the material. The shape of the material does not matter—it does not require an edge—only the contact between the spirit and the metal. While such weapons are nearly useless in combat with other people, they are indispensible when someone has no magic available to them to banish spirits (and rebuking the spirit has proved ineffective). Common people often put up a cold iron horseshoe (or other simple object) to keep spirits out of the house.

  • Cold iron, mined deep underground, is forged at a lower temperature to preserve its delicate properties. Items without metal parts cannot be made from cold iron. A halberd could be made of cold iron, but a quarterstaff could not. Weapons made out of cold iron bypass the damage reduction of fey creatures, demons, and warlock's damage reduction. Armor and shields cannot be made out of cold iron.
  • Cold Iron is anathema to Faerie, as lethal to the Faerie as radioactive materials are to mortals... the mere presence of Cold Iron can damage or kill a Faerie. The touch of Cold Iron can be (and often is) lethal, and there are accounts of even the Tuatha De Danu, the greatest of Faerie, being maimed permanently by Cold Iron weapons. Or as Thomas Olam says: "Cold Iron is to Faerie what Kryptonite is to Superman."

Or as Thomas Olam says: "Cold Iron is to Faerie what Kryptonite is to Superman." It is theorized that all Iron was Cold Iron once, but the magickal energies of the planet Earth has "denatured" the Cold Iron over hundreds of thousands of years to a form that is not lethal (but still uncomfortable) to the Faerie Host. This also explains why Iron from meteors or other extraterrestrial sources remain so potent as Cold Iron... perhaps after many centuries, the potency of such material will attenuate until it is no more powerful than regular Iron.
