Nova Squadron is a black ops/espionage group. Under the Terran Confederacy, it was numerically inferior to other wings of the Confederate Armed Forces, but its units are well-trained, much like those of Alpha Squadron. Its main purpose was to spy on other organizations, including other Confederate squadrons. After its transition to the Terran Dominion, its command staff was infiltrated by rogue elements of Project Shadowblade, and the squadron was subverted to lead a conspiracy against the regime of Emperor Arcturus Mengsk.

The group was formed during the Belsarus Insurrection, when Admiral Henri Belsarus when rogue and attempted to overthrow Fel. Jagged Fel put together the squadron to combat the rogue admiral, and they successfully did so, eventually destroying his flagship and killing him. Afterwards, Nova Squadron continued carrying out special missions for the Remnant. It was led by Tam Blackstar, an ace from Bastion, and primarily flew TIE/In interceptors.
- In 2368, Nova Squadron consisted of Cadet First Class Nicholas Locarno, Cadet Second Class Jean Hajar, Cadet Second Class Sito Jaxa, Cadet Third Class Wesley Crusher, and Cadet Joshua Albert. It was this team which won the Rigel Cup.

Shortly before commencement that year, on stardate 45703, the Nova Squadron flight team was involved in an accidental collision while practicing maneuvers for the graduation ceremony on the Academy Flight Range near the moons of Saturn. Cadet Albert was killed in the crash, while the other members of the team were able to activate their emergency transporters to escape their doomed ships. Upon investigation, it was determined that Nova Squadron, despite claiming to have done a Yeager loop, was in fact attempting to perform an unauthorized Kolvoord Starburst, a maneuver long prohibited by the Academy as a result of a similar accident in which all five cadets lost their lives. As a result of the inquiry and discovery of the apparent cover-up, the investigation board expelled Locarno and reprimanded the remaining cadets, voiding all credits for that year.
