The area of Forodwaith that lay north of Eriador was known as Forochel, together with the great ice-bay and cape, which carried the same name. This area roughly corresponded with the area where the Blue Mountains and the Iron Mountains once met.

Si tratta di una regione fredda, che si affaccia sulla Baia Ghiacciata di Forochel, ricoperta per buona pare dell'anno dal ghiaccio. Originariamente faceva parte del Beleriand ed era nota col nome di Forodwaith ma, a seguito della Guerra d'Ira, le immense devastazioni dettero origine a questa vasta e desolata regione. Abitata da uomini affini alla stirpe degli Esterlings, questa terra rimase a lungo esclusa dai grandi avvenimenti della Terra di Mezzo. Nel 1975 TE Arvedui, il Re dell'Arthedain, trovò rifugio in queste lande desolate dopo che il Re Stregone conquistò Fornost e vi morì tentando di raggiungere i Porti Grigi con una nave, che venne tuttavia intrappolata nei ghiacci.
