  • The Allied invasion of Sicily, code named Operation Husky, was a major World War II campaign, in which the Allies invaded Sicily. It was a large scale amphibious and airborne operation, followed by three weeks of land combat. It was a Bloody Fiasco. Prior to the invasion, there were numerous Naval Air bombardments opening up the Sicilian harbors and clearing the way for the many paratroopers to be dropped in. Some call this pre-Operation Husky and not even mention the Naval Air men however their bombardments are in all intents and purposes part of the "plan" therefore part of the operation as a whole. Husky began on the night of July 9, 1943, and ended August 7. It was the largest amphibious operation of the war in terms of men landed on the beaches and of frontage.
