| - Full name Class Nationality First appearanceMagic's Pawn The son of a farmer, Mardic is described as "earthy, square, and brown" (Magic's Pawn), and with a yellow magical aura. Mardic was quiet, not one for much talking. He walked quickly, but moved more slowly in magical workings, "holding reserves back until the very last moment and dithering about full commitment." (Magic's Pawn) This was the source of his problem when working with another mage. Herald-Mage Mardic was one of Savil's last proteges. He and his lifebonded, Herald-Mage Donni were working with Savil at the time a young Vanyel was first sent to Haven. Savil specialized in teaching mages to link and work as a team, something the pair initially struggled with. On the night Vanyel attempted suicide, Mardic and Donni joined the healing meld, giving Andrel the strength he needed to save Vanyel's life. That was when they finally understood what Savil had been trying to teach them. Now any Herald-Mage could complete their training. Knowing that Vanyel needed Savil's undivided attention, they asked Jaysen to take them on as proteges, freeing Savil to take Vanyel to the Tayledras. He and Donni died about a decade later during the Karsite War. One of the three Adept mages Karse hired attempted to incinerate an entire town. In a desperate attempt to confine the flames, Mardic and Donni had called the flames to themselves. They were destroyed, but the town was saved.
