Trivia
  • * The symptoms of J'onn's withdrawal included shape-shifting into a larger, more muscle-bound version of himself. Combined with a temporarily reduced intellect, this version of the Manhunter was reminiscent of the Marvel Comics character, the Incredible Hulk. * Also the "Addiction-Creature" created from J'onn's Addiction is reminiscent of another Marvel Comics character, Venom.

Synopsis
  • The Past
  • Booster Gold and Blue Beetle are at the JLI embassy and decide to play a prank on the Martian Manhunter. Aware of his fondness for Chocos cookies, they decide to steal J'onn's stash of snacks. Further, they buy up all of the Chocos in the city, leaving J’onn with absolutely no outlet to purchase more Chocos. J'onn goes into the city in an effort to find more Chocos, but naturally cannot find any. Growing desparate, he flies into a rage, and his size begins to increase in proportion to his anger. Further, his mind devolves to a state of brute savagery, and he begins growling, "Kooo-kieees!" as he tears through the streets of New York. Booster and Beetle realize that their seemingly harmless prank has grown far out of control and they try to calm the Manhunter down. This meets with little success, until they bait him to the warehouse where they have stockpiled all of their previously-purchased Chocos. His hunger abated, J'onn resumes a more normal form and sense of clarity. Later, they bring him back to the embassy, where Max Lord and the others hold an intervention. Batman performs a test on J'onn's DNA and determines that a chemical ingredient used in Chocos has caused a strong physical addiction in J'onn's body chemistry. The Martian Manhunter uses his shape-shifting skills to physically exorcise the addiction from his body. This former aspect of himself acquires partial sentience and attacks other members of the League. The addiction draws upon the craving of each of their targets, and succeeds in revealing embarrassing facets of each victim . J'onn uses his Martian Vision to destroy the manifestation and everything returns to normal.

Notes
  • * This is the first issue where Oreo cookies are referred to as Chocos. The sudden name change is likely due to trademark violation of the Oreo brand name, currently owned by the Nabisco Corporation. * The majority of this issue is revealed in flashback from the perspective of J'onn J'onnz. He reveals the events as part of a morality tale to Green Lantern at the JLA Watchtower. Wonder Woman is present and questions the accuracy of the tale. J'onn's response to her suggests that he may have in fact fabricated the entire story. * The placement of the flashback within the structure of the DC Universe timeline is uncertain. It takes place some time after Fire and Ice are inducted into the JLI, but prior to the Breakdowns storyline.
