It may only be cast during combat, and must be targeted at any unit that has already died during this battle. For File:Icon Mana.png Animate Dead returns the targeted unit to the battle, heals it completely and restores all of its File:Icon Figure.png . However, it also turns the unit into an Undead unit, which has several implications. If the unit was part of the caster's army before it died, it will return to the overland map after the battle as normal (assuming it survives). Enemy units restored by Animate Dead are always destroyed at the end of the battle, and cannot be kept.
