Kirk told to Sheme that Earth was the first target Bredell intended to destroy with this weapon, and he convinced Sheme to turn on Bredell and help prevent these catastrophes. Kirk's exact words were: The quote is interesting because it can be interpreted to suggest that in 2269, the total population of the United Federation of Planets, may have been approximately 100 billion people. In their discussion, Menao Sheme mentioned to Captain Kirk that Ies Bredell had a son who had visited Espoir station some month before, and whose name was Vas Bredel. On this occassion, Sheme told Kirk, the elder Bredell had become drunk, and Sheme heard him boast to his son about the power of the Big Bang Weapon. There is no indication of wether Kirk had already known of Vas Bredell. Kirk was able to secure Sheme's cooperation by relating the good memories he had of his father, that the man had a sense of compassion and honor that were not shared by Vardaine society in general. Following the capture of Bredell, Sheme decided to join Starfleet and applied to Starfleet Academy. His application was later accepted. (TOS video game: Judgment Rites)

The younger Sheme and his surviving family had to deal with the fallout from his father's sacrifice. Sheme became a security officer, and in a cruel twist of fate the was assigned to Bredell's security detachment on Espoir Station. When Captain James T. Kirk, Mr. Spock, and Dr. McCoy were captured by Bredell and James Whittaker Munroe they were put in a cell guarded by Sheme. After Sheme introduced himself to Kirk, Spock, and McCoy Kirk asked if he was related to Vakada Sheme. Kirk shared the good memories of his friend with Sheme, who decided to release the landing party, and gave them access to their equipment. McCoy made a quick medical scan that revealed that Sheme like all the Vardaine was the result of heavy genetic modified Freed from confinement the landing party was able to convince the rest of the security forces to turn against Bredell before destroying Bredell's superweapon. Following the ending of Bredell's mad plot to destroy the Federation, Menao Sheme applied to and accepted into Starfleet Academy. Kirk felt that he would someday make a fine Starfleet officer.
