Housing in the scheme were mainly 3 and 4 storey corporation-built tenements built in the postwar era. However, as the estates problems grew, people were moved out and huge swathes of Barlanark were razed to the ground in an effort to regenerate the area. Some new housing has been built although large parts of the area are still wasteland. Barlanark was identified in 2004 as the most deprived place in Scotland. Steps have been made to tackle this problem like the regeneration of the housing stock and better access to amenities.
