The town has its own newspaper - The Weatherfield Gazette and its own General Hospital, while its Council has had more than one resident of Coronation Street elected to it including Len Fairclough, Deirdre Barlow and Alf Roberts who was also the mayor of Weatherfield on two occasions. The Council was formed in 1974 following the 1972 Local Government Act and saw the abolition of the former Weatherfield County Borough Council with the new larger metropolitan district which included the town itself and smaller outlying suburbs.
