Ananias of Acts chapter 5, the husband of Sapphira, was a member of the early Church in Jerusalem. He sold a possession with his wife and kept part of the proceeds for himself, with his wife also knowing about it. He donated the remainder to the apostles, presumably claiming it was the entire amount. (At the time, believers would sell possessions and give the proceeds to the apostles for distributing to those in need.) Peter confronted Ananias about his deceit, at which point Ananias fell down dead.[Consider Rewording] Shortly, his wife came, unaware of her husband's death, and was questioned by Peter. She also similarly lied, whereupon she also died the same way.
