Il s’en est expliqué dans son livre « Existencilism », publié à compte d’auteur en 2002 : « Comme je ne savais pas bien manier la bombe de peinture, j’ai commencé par découper des pochoirs. Au fond, le fait de tagger est avant tout une question de reconnaissance. La moitié de la ville peut t’appartenir si tu griffonnes ton nom dessus. » En passant du bombage colérique au pochoir, du tag à la peinture de rue, Banksy réalise un saut qualitatif. Mais aussi expressif. Il abandonne la dimension tribale, territoriale des bombages pour transformer la ville en son terrain de jeu et de combat, et en sa propre galerie, où exposer ses œuvres éphémères. En Angleterre, Banksy s’est vite fait remarquer par son insolence, son humour anarchiste et la qualité de ses peintures parmi les pochoiristes londoniens. Il représente par exemple deux bobbies s’embrassant, ou urinant contre un mur, un enfant s’apprêtant faire éclater un sac en papier derrière un tireur d’élite embusqué, un hélicoptère de la police avec un nœud rose, des rats armés de perceuses dans un quartier voué à la démolition, une petite fille enlaçant une bombe. Des scènes à la fois poétiques et politiques. Parfois, il graffite des slogans protestataires, comme celui dénonçant les caméras de rue, ou encore satiriques « Sur ordre de l’Agence des autoroutes, cet espace est réservé aux graffitis », ou bien bombe sur des monuments historiques « Ceci ne vaut pas la peine d’être photographié ». Banksy intervient dans le monde entier. Banksy a fondé, en 2005, le projet « Santa's Ghetto » en réalisant des peintures sur le mur de Gaza afin de redonner espoir aux habitants palestiniens et israéliens. Aidé par d'autres artistes, comme Ron English, un Américain, le mur de séparation prend petit à petit les couleurs d'une toile artistique géante, comme avec l'image de la petite Vietnamienne brûlée au napalm qui tient par la main Mickey Mouse et Ronald McDonald. On y voit aussi un enfant rêvant à une faille dans le béton laissant voir le ciel en trompe l’œil, ou encore plusieurs fenêtres s’ouvrant sur des paysages de rêve.Concernant ce projet, Banksy raconte dans son livre Wall & Piece, qu'un jour, alors qu'il peignait sur le mur de séparation entre Israël et les Territoires Palestiniens, un habitant est venu lui dire : "vous embellissez le mur". Banksy, flatté : "Merci, c'est gentil", fut aussitôt coupé par le vieil homme: "on ne veut pas que ce mur soit beau, on ne veut pas de ce mur, rentrez chez vous". À New York, la même année, il est allé clandestinement accrocher quatre tableaux de lui, des faux classiques bien exécutés (un gentilhomme en perruque arborant un bombe de peinture, une noble dame portant un masque à gaz, une boite de soupe de Andy Warhol, une fresque préhistorique ironique) au musée de Brooklyn, au Metropolitan, au Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) puis au Muséum d’Histoire naturelle. À Los Angeles, où il exposait plusieurs pochoirs et sérigraphies en septembre 2006, il a réussi un coup fameux : il a installé un mannequin vêtu du costume orange des prisonniers de Guantanamo dans le parc de Disneyland. Sur le mur, on pouvait lire “Notre heure viendra“.En 2004, il a marqué un grand coup en imprimant un large quantité de faux billets de 10 pounds représentant Diana au lieu de la reine d’Angleterre, et “Bank of England” a été changé par “Banksy of England”. La plupart de ces billets ont été jetés dans la rue lors du carnaval à Notting Hill. En 2008, les sérigraphies et peintures de Banksy connaissent une envolée de prix phénoménale (Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Christine Aguilera figurent parmi ses collectionneurs).
